Flying Internationally with Breast Milk: How to Prepare Like a Pro
Flying internationally with breast milk can feel overwhelming, especially when leaving the comfort of U.S. regulations. From navigating confusing rules to ensuring your milk stays safe during long flights, preparation is the key to a stress-free journey.
But don’t worry—you’re not alone. With the right tools, knowledge, and a bit of planning, you can confidently transport your milk wherever your travels take you. As a nurse scientist who studies human milk and is also a frequent traveler and breastfeeding mom with 8+ years of pumping experience, I’ve got you covered!
Why International Travel with Breast Milk Can Be Challenging
Traveling within the U.S. is (mostly) straightforward thanks to TSA rules that allow breast milk, even when traveling without your baby. However, once you leave the U.S., things can get tricky:
Varied Rules by Country: Some countries allow only small volumes of breast milk, even when your baby is traveling with you (e.g., 100 ml limits in the Dominican Republic – although I know from experience this is not routinely enforced, which can be even more confusing!). Others, like parts of Europe, may prohibit frozen breast milk in carry-ons.
Inconsistent Airport Practices: Airport security personnel might interpret policies differently, meaning experiences can vary even within the same country.
Limited Guidance: Researching country-specific regulations isn’t always easy, as many airports don’t publish clear guidelines on breast milk transportation.
Being aware of these challenges is the first step. The second? Packing and preparing strategically.
5 Essentials for Flying Internationally with Breast Milk
Outside the U.S., traditional ice packs may be confiscated. Pack empty quart-sized plastic bags to fill with ice from food courts, airport restaurants, or the plane itself after security.
Learn Local Terms for Breast Milk
Knowing how to say “breast milk” in the local language (e.g., leche materna in Spanish) can help you communicate with airport security staff.
Carry Documentation
If traveling without your baby, bring a copy of their birth certificate or other proof of parenthood to explain why you’re carrying milk.
Have a Backup Plan
Research country-specific regulations ahead of time but prepare for unexpected scenarios. For example, ask if your cooler can be checked as luggage if security won’t allow it through in carry-on.
Keeping Breast Milk Cold While Traveling
Keeping your breast milk cold during international travel is a top priority. Here’s how to do it right:
Layer Your Ice Packs: For optimal insulation, place ice packs on the bottom, top, and sides of your cooler bag. I recommend using a long-lasting ice pack like these.
Use Bags of Ice as a Backup: If you don’t have access to a freezer, carry empty plastic bags for ice. Fill these at airport restaurants or on the plane if needed (you can ask the Flight Attendants for a refill!). Always keep a few spares in your pump bag just in case. Monitor Cooler Temperature with a Bluetooth Thermometer: A Bluetooth thermometer lets you check your cooler’s temperature from your phone without opening it. This tool can also ensure your hotel refrigerator stays at a safe milk storage temperature during your stay.
When to Consider Shipping Breast Milk
If transporting milk internationally feels daunting, a breast milk shipping service like Milk Stork may be an option. If you are traveling for work, some companies will cover the cost of this service – make sure to check out their resources to make the ask of your employer! These services can deliver your milk back home while you continue your travels. However, shipping isn’t foolproof—delays and logistical errors are always a possibility.
